Many try to, but a recent study of 2,000 companies over 10 years by our consulting firm, Bain &#038; Co., found that only one in 10 achieved sustained, profitable growth.
<a href="http://casestudy.co.in/category/business-case-study/business-strategy/bpo-business-strategy/" target="_blank">Outourcing and offshoring</a> began as cost-cutting measures, but companies that create real sustained value routinely use them for far more strategic ends--to gain capabilities that they don't have in-house, or to strengthen capabilities they do have. We have found that 85% of those winners use capability-sourcing broadly and strategically for everything from developing world-class talent to bringing new products to market faster and enabling business model innovation. In other words, they've moved way beyond mere cost-cutting.

Although foreign direct investment is defined by ownership and control, in practice the nature of that "control" is far from straightforward. The issue of control is examined, as is the related question of the "stickiness" of knowledge within large international firms. The discussion draws on a case study of the Anglo-Dutch consumer goods manufacturer Unilever, which has been one of the largest direct investors in the United States in the twentieth century.

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<strong>Outsourcing</strong> is the process of contracting a business function to someone else. It is sometimes confused with offshoring, though a function may be outsourced without offshoring or vice versa. The opposite of outsourcing is called vertical integration or insourcing.

The case is one of “socially-responsible outsourcing” (SRO): the use of – in this case IT – outsourcing contracts to drive livelihood benefits directly into poor communities.  I’ve already written up an impact analysis of SRO that delivered new jobs, incomes, skills and empowerment into poor urban communities in Kerala.

The case study analysed here also involved SRO to poor communities in India, but this time to telecentres in rural Bihar.  It contracted from city-based clients both data work (data entry, data editing, digitisation for three clients) and voice work (call centre-based service/technical support and tele-sales for six clients including the Govt of Bihar).  The full case report is available online.
