The investigation of large-magnitude incidents is fraught with difficulties and the process of establishing the primary cause of an incident often requires an understanding of human nature in addition to the necessary technical and engineering skills. The salient non-technical features that are common to the investigation of large-magnitude events are discussed in general. The investigation of the Bhopal disaster is discussed as a specific case study in light of these salient features. The results of the overall investigation are discussed and it is demonstrated that the commonly-held view that water-washing of a certain header caused the disaster is physically impossible. Evidence is presented which indicates that direct water entry into the methyl isocyanate storage tank was the likely initiating cause of the Bhopal disaster. click here to read more

South Korea experienced a financial crisis in 1997 after more than 30 years of fast eco-nomic growth. During the crisis its gross domestic product (GDP) decreased sharply and many enterprises went bankrupt. The stated-owned banks in South Korea suffered huge losses and investors lost confidence in investing in the South Korean financial market. One result of the crisis reveals the weakness of the South Korean economy- government intervention in the banking sector.

This paper provides the reason for the financial crisis in 1997 in the introduction sec-tion. The following section is a theoretical framework, in which we have presented two macroeconomic models: the Solow model-growth accounting formula and the Ricardo-Viner model. With empirical findings, we show how the South Korean government re-sponded after the crisis with three approaches to banking reform. We include the two macroeconomic models in the analysis of how the three approaches affected the eco-nomic growth in South Korea during the reform process in the analysis section. Finally, we conclude that the South Korean banking sector reform has provided a success and briefly discuss how China should implement the South Korean useful experiences into its ongoing process of banking sector reform. <a href="http://casestudy.co.in/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/korean-banking-reforms.pdf"target=_blank>Read more…

Under this paradigm, Government of India and UNDP launched the ‘Disaster Risk Management’ (DRM) programme in 169 districts across 17 states in the country, including in Maharashtra.
In Maharashtra, the DRM is being implemented in 14 districts and seven Municipal Corporations. The Relief and Rehabilitation Department, Government of Maharashtra is the nodal agency for the implementation of this programme in the State. During the course of implementation of the programme, a number of innovative strategies and processes have been adopted which in turn lead to very interesting and encouraging results. <a href="http://www.karmayog.org/redirect/strred.asp?docId=22527"target=_blank>Read More…

After experiencing what the Financial Times described as a “near death experience” in 2002, it has recorded several years of increased profitability, rising share prices and positive ratings developments. Although all shares have recently felt the effects of a falling market, most analysts expect RSA to continue to outperform its peers. <a href="http://www.emb.com/EMBDOTCOM/UK/UK/ERM/RSA%20Case%20studyv3.pdf"target="_blank">Read more to know why RSA is able to achieve this feat…

The acquisition of MCI/WorldCom was the direct result of the behavior of WorldCom’s senior managers as documented above. While it can be argued that the demise of AT&T Corp. was not wholly attributable to WorldCom’s behavior, AT&T Corp.’s decimation certainly was facilitated by the events surrounding WorldCom, since WorldCom was the benchmark long distance telephone and Internet communications service provider. Indeed, the ripple effect of WorldCom’s demise goes far beyond one company and several senior managers. It had a profound effect on an entire industry. <a href="http://www.scu.edu/ethics/dialogue/candc/cases/worldcom-update.html"target="_blank">Read more…
